John Wat

John H. Y. Wat is a Hawaii actor, director and teacher. He appeared onstage as an actor most recently as Cicero and Messala in Julius Caesar for the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival, and as Chow Fat in Ghosts in the Plague Year for Kumu Kahua Theatre. He was also featured in the independent film, Parts of the Same Circle, which was shown at the 2012 Hawaii International Film Festival. He teaches theater at the Mid-Pacific Institute School of the Arts and has taken two Mid-Pacific productions to the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival as part of the American High School Theatre Festival. He has also directed productions for Kumu Kahua Theatre, the Hawaii State Libraries, and the Rainier Valley Youth Theatre in Seattle. He is the co-editor of He Leo Hou, a collection of plays by Native Hawaiian playwrights. As a dancer, he has performed with Dances We Dance in José Limon's Missa Brevis and Fritz Ludin's Fish in the Garden. He has played the role of Drosselmeyer for twelve seasons of The Nutcracker with the Hawaii State Ballet. He received an MA in Speech Communication with a major in Performance Studies from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and has completed coursework for the PhD in Performance Studies at Northwestern University. He has served on the boards of directors of the Hawaii Literary Arts Council, the Hawaii State Theatre Council, and Bamboo Ridge Press, and is currently a member the board of Kumu Kahua Theatre.
