Café Onda exists as an online extension of the Latina/o Theatre Commons (LTC). The LTC is a self-organized collective of Latina/o theater practitioners who have chosen to adopt a commons-based approach to advocate for Latina/o theater as a vital, significant presence in the not-for-profit theater sector. The LTC is committed to radical transparency, knowledge sharing, and accessibility. At Café Onda, all of our articles, blog posts, and journals are pitched and written by you for you, and while we never publish incendiary or hurtful attacks, we do our best to facilitate and encourage the lively (and yes, sometimes even heated) conversations around our work. We are committed to providing a safe, crowd-sourced space for online dialogue and discussions around the topic of Latina/o theater. As the definitions of Latinidad and Latina/o theater continue to shift and evolve, so will Café Onda.

Café Onda is supported by HowlRound: A Center for the Theatre Commons. HowlRound uses a commons-based approach in their work to increase the effective use of resources and to democratize access. A commons is a form of wealth we inherit or create together, which is shared in order to benefit an entire community. HowlRound uses commons-based peer production (or open sourcing) to produce content. One result of this production strategy is a vast community of stakeholders who authentically own the purpose and co-create the platforms.

Café Onda is a work in progress. Although we will officially launch in October 2014, we will begin publishing content over the summer to get the conversations going. We encourage you to follow HowlRound on Facebook and Twitter, and sign up to receive HowlRound and Café Onda content in your inbox. Check out the previously published  Café Onda posts, and get involved in the conversation. Moving forward, we challenge you to write to us. As Café Onda evolves, we hope to become a fully bilingual space! We accept and encourage conversations in Spanish and offer full translations of such work. Pitch us your idea by reviewing the guidelines and emailing [email protected]. Tell us what you want to talk about—we’re listening.

Onward, and in solidarity,

Georgina Escobar (Café Onda Managing Editor), Abigail Vega (LTC Producer), and the Café Onda Editorial Board (Nancy Garcia Loza, Brian Herrera, Sandra Islas, Teresa Marrero, Tlaloc Rivas, Beatriz Rizk, Marisela Treviño Orta, and Tiffany Vega).

***
